WORLD INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY DAY 2019

Zanele Motau, an Associate in the Corporate department, and Chikondi Banda, an intern at the Firm, recently honoured an invitation to this year’s World IP day celebrations under the theme, “Reach for Gold: IP and Sport.”

This day is commemorated given the significant and global contribution of intellectual property to the socio and economic development of the world at large.

Zanele and Chikondi witnessed a panel discussion, wherein the Registrar of Intellectual Property in Botswana and various stakeholders in the sports and clothing industry as panelists, engaged on how innovation, creativity and the IP rights that encourage and protect them support the development of sport and its enjoyment in Botswana and around the world.

A keynote address by a renowned seasoned sports attorney and Co-Chair of O’Melveny’s Sports Industry Group Mr Jared F. Bartie, gave an in-depth presentation on intellectual property.

This event was a great insight into IP and its close link to sports and sporting products and how IP can play a role in the diversification of the economy as well as building a knowledge-based economy. We continue to learn as we pave the way forward in the growth of IP in Botswana.
