Lesedi Dingake presented on the new Consumer Protection Act of 2018, which is a repeal of the Consumer Protection Act of 1988.
The Act outlines the rights of consumers and the duties of suppliers respectively. The Act also provides for the relief that a consumer is entitled to in a case where a supplier has not met his obligations. The new Act will be overseen by the Competition and Consumer Authority. Under the new Act, the Competition and Consumer Authority will have broader functions, including those which were previously within the mandate of the Consumer Protection Office.
The key difference between the old and the new Act is that under the new Act, Botswana has provided for the implementation of a single body consumer and competition enforcement agency; the Competition and Consumer Authority.
