Eleng Mugabe, an Associate in the Corporate department, recently attended the 8th Africa Competition Law Conference in Johannesburg which was themed “Public Interest and Competition Regulation: Africa at the forefront of international changes in competition and economic policy”.
The conference was organized by Bowmans, one of the leading African law firms in South Africa.
Eleng witnessed discussions between (i) officials from different African competition authorities including Botswana and (ii) Partners from various law firms based overseas and in Africa. According to Eleng, the main take away from the discussions was that the various African competition authorities are now recognising public interest issues (such as the effect on employment, citizen economic empowerment, SMMEs, maintenance of lower prices, improvement of quality of products and overall social benefits) to be a major factor in determining competition matters.
